I’m now on day 6 of Kickstart and I’m getting into a nice routine now of having my breakfast and reading the article of the day. Today is all about why calorie counting isn’t necessary. Hurrah!
When I’ve worked with clients before and tried to get them to calorie count, it just doesn’t work. Why?
1. It gets boring very quickly – who has got time to sit down and add up all the calories across the course of the day?!
2. Most of us underestimate how many calories we’re actually consuming. Whether it’s done deliberately or not, remembering and counting every single thing is hard. I’ve had so many clients say to me that they hardly eat anything so don’t understand why they’re overweight. But when we get into it and really look at what has gone into their mouth, they’ve forgotten a lot – picking at the kids left overs, nibbling bits whilst cooking, forgetting about the second helping, or that tiny taste of pudding, ignoring the glass or two of wine, etc.
And don’t get me wrong, there is no judgement here- I’m exactly the same. It’s too easy to forget or think things don’t really count.
It’s why I encourage you to keep a food diary or take pics of your meals. Record it as you go along (no need to count calories) and seeing it all written down or in front of you will quickly help you see where extra calories are creeping in. Often it’s from grazing or snacking across the day- something we don’t even notice we’re doing. Cut out the unnecessary extras and you’ll be amazed the difference it makes.
Try it today- record everything you eat and drink (being completely honest) and see what little changes you could make. Just focus on one thing initially and then gradually change other things if you need to.
Happy Bank holiday Monday everyone (even though we don’t get bank holiday Monday in Oz ???)
